Walnut Hill consists of multiple rural communities surrounded by LaForestra timber land and timber land belonging to International Paper. The previous mentioned companies are the largest land holders in Walnut Hill. Numerous family farms comprise the majority of agriculture production. The area is considered to provide some of the best hunting lands in all of Florida. Walnut Hill has one school, Ernest Ward middle school, formerly a K-12 but now designated as a 6-8 middle school. The school is named for deceased World War I veteran Ernest Ward. The middle school is feed by Bratt Elementary school, located in Bratt, Florida and feeds Northview High School, also in Bratt. The middle school was rebuilt in 2015 after much debate by the Escambia County school district. The decision to keep Ernest Ward school open was a 4 to 3 decision by the school board, rejecting the proposal to build a new school in Bratt, closer to the elementary and high schools.
