WAFS AM is a local Atlanta area AM broadcasting station (licensed to Atlanta, Georgia) that broadcasts business news talk radio programming. It broadcasts at a frequency of 1190 kHz with 25,000 Watts of power during the daytime and 2,300 Watts during critical hours using a non-directional antenna. The Federal Communications Commission has authorized WAFS to operate pre-sunrise (PSRA) with 350 Watts and post-sunset (PSSA) with power levels from 150 to 54 Watts. The signal of WNIV (AM) at a frequency 970 kHz is broadcast from the same tower as WAFS using an antenna diplexing system. WAFS is classified as a Class-D AM broadcast station according to the Federal Communications Commission.

History

In 1989, WAFS took over the 920 kHz frequency vacated by WGST's move to 640 kHz at the time. WGST formerly broadcast on the frequency since the 1930s. WAFS, owned by the Moody Bible Institute, broadcast on the frequency of 920 kHz with a Religious radio format in Atlanta until 2004. Moody Bible Institute sold WAFS on March 24, 2004 to the present owners, Salem Communications. On August 2, 2004, the owners of WAFS and WGKA, Salem Communications, decided on the frequency swap between the two stations. Prior to this date, WGKA occupied the 1190 kHz frequency in the Atlanta area.

In July 2006, Salem Communications entered an LMA and flipped the radio format of WAFS to Spanish Tropical and branded the station as "Mega 1190". However, the arrangement was abruptly pulled by Salem Communications in February 2007 over a dispute with the LMA. WAFS' format was switched to a Spanish Christian radio format with the "Radio Luz" branding until April 2010.

On April 6, 2010, the format changed again to a business news and talk radio format with "Biz 1190" branding carrying programming from the Bloomberg Radio network.
