District 9 of the Virginia Senate is a senatorial district that currently encompasses all of Charles City County and portions of the City of Richmond, Henrico County and Hanover County in the U.S. state of Virginia. The current Senator from District 9 is Donald McEachin. The district changed significantly during the redistricting after the 1950 and 1960 censuses, and for a time represented Arlington County in Northern Virginia (not even contiguous to the current boundaries). Earlier, the district represented Prince Edward County, Virginia to the south and west of the current boundaries.

Historical boundaries

From 1940 to 1956, the 9th Senate District included the Virginia Piedmont counties of Amelia, Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Cumberland, Nelson and Powhatan.

From 1956 to 1966, the 9th Senate District included all of Arlington County. As a result of the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in the One person, one vote case of Davis v. Mann, the General Assembly redistricted itself and from 1966 to 1970, Arlington County was divided into 2 districts with the 9th District including only the southern portion of the county.

Beginning in 1972, as a result of a regular decennial redistricting, the 9th Senate District was relocated to Richmond and included the eastern side of the City of Richmond. In 1981, the district was expanded to include part of Henrico County, in addition to part of the City of Richmond. In 1992, the district saw Charles City County added to the district which still incorporated part of Henrico County and part of the City of Richmond.

Current boundaries

All Virginia Senate districts were redrawn in 2011. The 9th District includes all of Charles City County, and parts of Henrico County, Hanover County and the City of Richmond. In Henrico County, the district includes all of the eastern side of the county, including the areas of Sandston, Highland Springs, Chamberlayne and Glen Allen. In the City of Richmond, the 9th district includes Shockoe Bottom and Shockoe Slip, Court End, Capitol Square, Jackson Ward, parts of the Fan District, Carytown, Windsor Farms, Brookland Park, Ginter Park and Washington Park. In Hanover County, the town of Ashland and nearby rural areas are included.
