Vigilantism in India refers to when a group metes out extralegal punishment to alleged lawbreakers. Vigilantism is also referred to as "mob justice". It is caused by perception of police corruption and delays in the judicial system, and is usually practised on petty crooks.

2011

  • In August 2011, ten suspected thieves from Andhra Pradesh were beaten to death with stones and wooden clubs by more than 2,000 villagers in Chikaballapur, Karnataka. Police were on the scene but were prevented by the mob from stopping the violence.
