Venus and Adonis by Titian, now in the J. Paul Getty Museum, is a 1555–60 painting. It is one of a number of versions of the mythological subject by this artist.
Provenance
The museum acquired the painting in 1992. Its provenance includes the Orleans Collection sale in London at the end of the eighteenth century. Like most of the collection, it was bought by a consortium. It was selected by a member of the consortium, Frederick Howard, 5th Earl of Carlisle, as part of his share, although he did not keep it long.
