VR blue carriages

The VR classes Eit, Eip and Ein (and many others), better known as blue carriages due to their colour, are passenger cars built between 1961 and 1985 for long-distance passenger travel in Finland. They are operated by VR Group and are slowly phased out in favour of InterCity trains.

History

The first 14 carriages were built in Germany by Esslingen, and the model was then copied by VR's Pasila workshop and Valmet. Over 600 blue carriages were built in Finland under over 30 different nomenclatures. The cars are capable of speeds varying from 140 to 160 kilometres per hour (87 to 99 mph).
