VARIE (Visual Arts Research Institute Edinburgh)

The Visual Arts Research Institute Edinburgh (VARIE) is a research consortium which consists of:

  • University of Edinburgh
  • Edinburgh College of Art
  • With the following associated members:

  • National Galleries of Scotland
  • National Museums Scotland
  • National Library of Scotland
  • And affiliated History of Art departments:

  • University of St. Andrews
  • University of Glasgow
  • VARIE was established in 1999 and is a member of the International Association of Research Institutes in the History of Art.

    Activities

    VARIE encourages and manages collaborative and interdisciplinary projects into visual culture. It organises events, such as seminars and conferences, publishes conference papers and provides advice on funding applications.

    In February 2009, it launched an e-journal entitled Art in Translation, which publishes English translations of articles on all aspects of visual culture. The journal is published by Berg Publishers and will appear three times a year.
