Release and promotion
In May 2013, Flying Lotus confirmed that he started working on the writing portion of Captain Murphy's debut studio album V. He also confirmed that the production portion was complete and that the lead single would be called "Hoodie". In August 2013, the Captain Murphy single "Between Villians" featuring Viktor Vaughn, Earl Sweatshirt, and Thundercat was released on Adult Swim Singles Program 2013. In September 2013, a Captain Murphy song called "Evil Grin" was released on the Grand Theft Auto V soundtrack and played on the in-game radio FlyLo FM.
In August 2014, the Captain Murphy single "Cosplay" was released on Adult Swim Singles Program 2014. Flying Lotus revealed in the same month that Kendrick Lamar would be a featured on the album.
In October 2015, Flying Lotus confirmed the album would be released by the end of 2016. In October 2016, the Captain Murphy single "Crowned" was released on Adult Swim Singles Program 2016.
