The original university in the Lille region of France was the University of Douai established in 1559 in Douai and that was moved to Lille in 1887 as University of Lille (French: Université de Lille).

University campuses in the Academy of Lille (Académie de Lille) are members of the Université Lille Nord de France and European Doctoral College Lille Nord-Pas de Calais.

Lille has three public university campuses (student enrollment: 90,000):

  • Université Lille 1 (science and technology)
  • Université du Droit et de la Santé de Lille or Université Lille II (law and health)
  • Charles de Gaulle University – Lille III (humanities, arts, administration and social sciences)

    • Lille has one private university (enrollment: 20,500)

  • Université Catholique de Lille
