History
Established in 1929 the University College of Engineering is the oldest and the biggest in Telangana. Established in 1929, eleven years after the formation of Osmania University, it was the sixth engineering college to be established in the whole of British India.
The college moved to its present permanent building in 1947. Today it is the biggest among the campus colleges of Osmania University.
The college was conferred autonomous status in 1994.
Departments and Centers
The college has the following departments:
Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering (BME) constitutes human beings earliest efforts to understand the living world in terms of the basic sciences and to comprehend the body mechanism in terms of their technological creations. Biomedical Engineering involves the study and application of engineering processes for diagnosis and therapy. It is a rapidly changing interdisciplinary domain, in which each branch of engineering interacts with a number of other disciplines to yield a fundamental understanding of health maintenance processes and improved diagnosis, optimal interventional (surgical, therapeutic & rehabilitative) procedures, prosthesis and organ assist systems, health care systems performance and econometrics.
Osmania University is the first University to start Biomedical Engineering at undergraduate level in the country. The course was started in the year 1982 with an intake of 10 students in the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering. An exclusive Biomedical Engineering Department was formed in the year 1993 to give the much needed thrust to Programme. The student intake was enhanced to 30 in the year 1996.The Department moved to its present premises in the year 1997.
The Department has been engaged in research and consultancy projects. It received research grants from various government agencies such as AICTE; UGC, DST, TEQIP (Phase I & II) etc., The Department established a Biomedical Instrumentation centre (BMIC) to cater to the needs of medical profession. The B.E (BME) programme of the department has been accredited by the NBA for the five years with effect from August 2013. A special appreciation was given by the visiting expert team. The faculty members of the department are also active, effective and acknowledged contributors to UPE project of the UGC. The Department has also started Post Graduate program in Biomedical Electronics in the academic year 2006-2007. The total floor space of 10800 sft. houses class rooms, laboratories and other amenities.
Academic Programs:
Career Options: After completion of the course, the students may find place in
Civil Engineering
The Department of Civil Engineering was the first to be established, in 1929, with an intake of 12 students. The department offers Masters and Doctoral Degree programmes in specializations such as Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydromechanics and Water Management and a Sponsored Programme in Construction Engineering and Management.
The department has developed expertise in concrete technology, recycled aggregate concrete, and composites besides finite element analysis, bridge engineering, tall structures, foundation engineering, environmental engineering, integrated expert systems, and fuzzy logic applications. The research projects include ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), water and air quality studies, water management, wind tunnel studies, geo-textiles, seismic resistant structures, bridges, and computer applications.
Computer Science and Engineering
Osmania University began the Computer Science and Engineering programme in 1981, when the UGC identified the university for its manpower development programme. The Department offers B.E., MCA, M.Tech and MSIT programs.
The following areas have been identified for research leading to M.Tech./Ph.D. degrees : Artificial Intelligence, Functional Languages, Computer Networks, Computer Graphics and Real-Time Fault Tolerant Systems.
For M.Tech. the research work encompasses System Software Simulation and Modeling, Artificial Intelligence, Real-Time Systems, Implementation of Functional Languages, DBMS Applications, Data Communications and Networks and Security Computer Graphics, Image Processing and pattern Recognition.
Electrical Engineering
The department started as a part of the Civil Engineering Department in the form of an Electro-Techniques Laboratory.
The full-fledged Department of Electrical Engineering came into being in 1949. The Telecommunication course became the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, offering a four-year degree course in that area. Continuing education for employed diploma-holders was started in 1963 through the four-year Part-Time Degree Course in Electrical Engineering.
The department has organized programmes for practicing engineers of NTPC, BHEL, ATI, ECIL and the Kirloskar Electric Company. The department offers post-degree programs in areas like power systems and power electronics.
Electronics and Communication Engineering
The Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering came into being in 1959 with two faculty members. In a span of three and half decades, it now has 18 teaching staff and 300 students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The staff specialize in Digital Systems, Control Systems, Signal Processing, Microwave, Microprocessor applications, Computer Systems and Communication Engineering.
The Department has research facilities and expertise in the fields of Microwave Engineering, Digital Signal Processing and Digital Communications.
Mechanical Engineering
The Mechanical Engineering Department was established in 1939 to offer a three year degree course in Mechanical Engineering, with an intake of 50 students. The department started M.E. courses in Production Engineering, Turbo machinery, Automation and Robotics, and CAD/CAM and Tool Design.
The department faculty members are involved in National Committees as well as in World Bank-assisted projects. The department has organized eleven National Seminars/Conferences/Workshops/Short-term programs in areas such as CAD/CAM, stress analysis using FEM, Optimization of energy, Recovery systems and metal spinning. The department has undertaken consultancy projects from Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Hyderabad) on stress analysis of turbine supporting systems and preparation of CAD documentation.
College centers are:
Canteen
The canteen is open from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm on all working days.
Library
The Diamond Jubilee Library was built on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of the College of Engineering in 1992. The library stocks engineering books and journals to serve the requirements of all the branches of engineering (i.e. Biomedical, Computer Sciences, Civil, Electrical, Electronics and Communication and Mechanical) and inter disciplinary subjects such as Maths, Physics, Chemistry and English.
The library has following sections:
Student Activity Center(SAC)
The President of Student Body is Moinuddeen (Aman). There is a Students Activities Centre in the premises of the College adjacent to Sports Complex. Indoor games like carroms and chess are provided as a recreational activity for students to relax during free time. Presently the chess champion is Bhavya and drums queen is Archana. This centre is the heart of Osmania .
