Background
Florida's single seat in the House of Representatives had been held by the Democrats since 1852. By 1856, the former opposition Whig Party had died out. In the South, many former Whigs joined the Know Nothings.
Election results
Former incumbent Augustus Maxwell (D) did not run for re-election.
