The hybrid elm cultivar Ulmus × hollandica 'Eleganto-Variegata' is one of a number of cultivars arising from the crossing of the Wych Elm U. glabra with a variety of Field Elm U. minor. First mentioned by Miller [1] in The Gardeners Dictionary ed. 2. 1735, Ulmus no. 9, as U. major Hollandica, angustis & magis acuminatis sammaris, folio latissimo scabro, eleganter variegato.

Cultivation

No specimens are known to survive beyond Brighton after 2009.

Accessions

  • Brighton & Hove City Council, UK, NCCPG Elm Collection. One tree in Stanford Avenue had striped variegation on the lower branch leaves until 2009; this tree is grafted at 1.5 m.
