Vermont will be a Virginia-class submarine, commemorating the history between the U.S. state of Vermont and the United States Navy. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced its name on September 18, 2014.
The U.S. Navy awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat the contract to construct 10 Block IV Virginia-class submarines for $17.6 billion on April 28, 2014. Vermont commenced in May 2014 with the 10th ship scheduled for delivery in 2023.
