USS Caracara (AMc-40), an Accentor-class minesweeper commissioned by the U.S. Navy for use during World War II, was named after the Caracara, a large South American hawk.
World War II operations
Caracara was launched on 23 August 1941 by the Bristol Yacht Building Co., South Bristol, Maine. She was placed in service on 30 December 1941, and after training with Experimental Minesweeping Group, Mine Warfare School, reported to the 10th Naval District where she engaged in minesweeping activities around the West Indies. She was stricken from the Navy Register on 21 January 1946.
