History and profile

The magazine was first published in September 1952. It contains information on aquariums and fish species that both beginning and advanced hobbyists can use. It provides two question-and-answer departments (one for freshwater fish and the other for marine fish) as well as regular columns: Ask Jack (on discus care), Cichlidophiles (on New and Old World cichlids), Livebearers Unlimited, The Planted Tank, Top of the Food Chain (on predatory and "monster" fish), The Reefer (on reef tanks), Fish of the Month, Marine Invert of the Month, and Japanese aquascaper Takashi Amano's monthly "Nature Aquarium" article series. It contains many fish-related advertisements, and also contains notices and event schedules posted by aquarium societies and organizations. The magazine also has an associated website.

In the first half of 2007, the magazine had an average circulation of 22,600 issues per month.

The headquarters of the magazine is in Neptune City, New Jersey. It is published by TFH Publications, which also publishes books and other magazines on exotic animals of all species – especially books relating to the care of animals as pets.

On the magazine website, their main headline reads "The World's Most Trusted Source of Information About the Fascinating World of Fishkeeping."
