The glass gains its surface strength, ability to contain flaws, and crack-resistance by being immersed in a hot potassium salt ion-exchange bath.
How tough is Corning Gorilla Glass 2
During its manufacture, the glass is toughened by ion exchange. The material is immersed in a molten alkaline potassium salt at a temperature of approximately 400 °C (750 °F),wherein smaller sodium ions in the glass are replaced by larger potassium ions from the salt bath.
The larger ions occupy more space and thereby create a surface layer of high residual compressive stress at the surface, giving the glass surface increased strength, ability to contain flaws,and overall crack-resistance, making it resistant to damage from everyday use.
Three main materials are used to make a Commercial glass . Sand which is chemically called as silicon dioxide. The other two raw materials in commercial glass include limestone and sodium carbonate.
Corning combines silicon dioxide (SiO2) with other chemicals before melting it down into a glass melt which produces a resulting glass which is aluminosilicate which means the glass contains aluminum, silicon and oxygen. The glass also contains sodium (Na) ions, which are important in the next process of manufacturing.

The Ion Exchange
One of the processes used in making gorilla glass is known as the Ion exchange process
Ion exchange is an exchange of ions between two electrolytes or between an electrolyte solution and a complex. In most cases the term is used to denote the processes of purification, separation, and decontamination of aqueous and other ion-containing solutions with solid polymeric or mineralic ion exchangers.
