Michael Bridge, a reporter for the global media Sky Sports, said on a podcast, "I heard from a source that Romero would have left if Conte had stayed in Tottenham." It's not relevant now, but I don't think the two were close."

Romero is the core of Tottenham's defense at the moment. He began to gain attention in Atalanta, Italy. The active tackle and interception based on fast feet were excellent. At the end of the 2020/21 season, he was selected as the best defender in Serie.

Several teams aimed at him. Manchester United and Barcelona were interested, but Romero's choice was Tottenham. Romero said, "Tottenham wanted me from the first day. I have to pay back on the field now. I liked Tottenham's project," he said, explaining the reason for his choice.

At the beginning of the transfer to Tottenham, he was unable to play much due to injury. Romero, who slowly adapted to the team and league, moved to the center of defense. Last season alone, he played in 34 games and gained ground.

Prior to this season, he was selected as vice captain along with James Madison. In the fourth round of the English Premier League against Burnley, he scored with a fantastic mid-range shot in the extra time of the first half. After the game, along with Son Heung-min and Madison, he was selected as the fourth-round Lee Ju-ne's team by "BBC."

Lionel Messi was also praised for being called the best player in history. After the 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Ecuador on the 8th, Messi said, "Today's MOM is Romero. He is the best defender at the moment," he praised.

Romero almost left Tottenham. Romero said at the time in July, "When I came back from winning the World Cup, I already had a bad relationship between the team and the coach." Conte was hated for publicly criticizing the squad.

Conte terminated his contract with Tottenham in March, citing poor performance. Since then, coach Enze Postecoglou has been appointed to Tottenham. Tottenham currently has three wins and one draw in four games since the league opened. Romero is playing 'happy football' under coach Postecoglou.
