  1. Aim fortakingGATE exam variesfromcandidate tocandidate.Studentsfrom private engineeringcolleges try toget into M.Tech inorder to havestamp of the betterknowninstitutions and for themreasonable percentile serves thepurpose. On the other hand,students studying in wellestablished institutes may aim toget into IIT or other equivalentinstitutions. For them very highpercentile isessential.
  2. Normally 3 to4 months of serious studywill besufficient for thepreparation.
  3. Thosestudents who are in final yearhave to schedule their studies assemester exam in winter and otherengagements may absorb lot oftime.
  4. First ofall makeaproper strategy beforestartingpreparation of theexamination.
  5. Youhave tochoose the subject andstudy asper the syllabusmentioned in theGATEbrochure.
  6. Collectthe Syllabus for the GATEexam.
  7. Collectall therelevant books for thesubject.This collection mustinclude thebooks for Fundamentaland basicconcepts as well as forspecificproblems, guide book forGATE andprevious year questionpapers.
  8. Alwaystry to gothrough the standardbooks whichare easily availableand in whichyou can easilyunderstand theconcepts. This willimprove yourlearningability.
  9. Meantime you should be in touch withsome GATE experienced persons forproperguidance.
  10. Readsyllabus and question paperscarefully so that it will easy foryou to make a properapproach.
  11. Startpreparingfrom the initial topicsi.e. thebasic ones and note downthe basicconcepts (definitions,unit,dimension etc.) as well asnecessary theories, formulaeetc.
  12. Try tosolve asmanyproblems as possiblefromdifferent book as well as trytofind more and moretricks.
  13. Try toapplyyourown logics and tricksinsolvingproblems and note itdownbecauseit will save yourtime intheexaminationhall.
  14. Conductself testsbased on variouschapters.Continue the self testsand try toachieve a very goodscore.
  15. Practicemore andmore problems and followthe sameprocedure for the rest ofthechapters andsubjects.
  16. Finally, goforself tests based on wholesyllabusand if necessary takehelp ofothers in conductingself-tests.
  17. Todo allthese things one has tospend lotsof time on studies andshould bevery sincere throughoutthepreparation.
  18. Onemonthbefore the examination youshouldstart revising the courseas manytimes as possible so thaton theday before the exam youwill beprepared enough to cracktheexam.
  19. In therevisionstage concentrate more ontheselectedtopics.
  20. Alwaysreach the examination centre 30min before the start of the exam.It helps you to stay cool and calmduringexam.
  21. Keep allyournecessary stationeries andadmitcard with you before goingto theexaminationcentre.
  22. Duringexam tryto attempt section Awhich iscompulsory and that to Q1carryingone mark each and thosein Q2carrying two markseach.
  23. It’s veryimportantto manage the time wellduring theexam. So manage thetime wellduring theexam.
  24. In theexaminationhall one should notget panicklyupon receiving thequestion paperrather candidatesshould stay coolbefore the testso that they donot get confusedwhile attemptingthepaper.
  25. Timemanagement isimportant but not atthe cost ofanswering the paperaccurately.
  26. Always trytoattempt only thosequestions inwhich you are prettyconfident andyou know the answerverywell.
  27. Read thequestionscarefully and applyproper logicbefore marking theanswer.
  28. Alwaysavoid thenegativemarking.
  29. Do notattempt unnecessary questions inwhich you are not confidentbecause that may cost youmuch.
  30. Do not tryto gethold of the entire syllabusprescribed by GATE. A selectivepreparation would be a veryhelpful concept and should belearnedaccurately.
  31. Memorizationof any problem without aclearidea of the concept will beafutileexercise.
  32. I feelthat it is better to have flexibletime plan before going to exam andhave a balance of mind. It helpsin avoiding the sillymistakes.
  33. Results ofqualified candidates in GATEwillgive All India Rank andindicatepercentile score. Forexample, apercentile score of 99means youare in the top 1%category of thecandidates whoappeared forGATE.
  34. Candidates who getless than 70 percentile get noscorecard.
  35. Afterpublication of GATE results,students must apply to individualInstitutes to get theirapplicationforms.
  36. Institutesadvertise M.Tech admissions inleading newspapers from 1st Apriltill end July. However someInstitutes do not advertise andtherefore students have to get theformsthemselves.
  37. Admission inthe Institute is based on GATEpercentile.
  38. TheconcernedInstitute may conductwritten testand/or interview forthe purposeofadmission.
  39. During thepursuit of M.Tech, you are paid ascholarship of Rs. 5000 per monthby the Government of India. Thisamount is enough for livingexpenses including purchase ofbooks etc. the scholarship is paidfor the entire period ofM.Tech.
