Macau welcomed nearly 31 million tourists last year

Macau's Statistics and Census Bureau reported that the average occupancy rate of 107 hotels and guesthouses in the city rose nearly 2 percentage points to 83.3 percent, while the number of tourists visiting rose 0.8 percent year-on-year to 30.95 million.

The figures also show that hotels in their former Portuguese residences welcomed just over 12 million guests last year - an increase of 13.6 percent year-on-year - and led by a 12.8 percent increase in travelers from mainland China to 7.6 million, while the total number of overnight stays rose 9.8 percent to 15.7 million and accounted for 50.7 percent of city visitors.

Statistics census service also said Macau hotels welcomed 304,000 holidaymakers from South Korea last year, an improvement of 34.3 percent compared to the comparison, while those from nearby Hong Kong rose 17.8 percent to more than 1.7 million.

According to the survey, the occupancy rate of four-star hotels was the highest at 86.3%, up 5.7 percentage points from the previous year, followed by 83.7%, an improvement of 0.3 percentage points over expensive five-star hotels.

However, figures from the Macau Hotel Association show that the average stay last year was 1.4 months, down 0.1 nights from the previous 12 months, while daily room rates were down 12.7% to $161. As a result, the average tariff for a five-star room was down 11.6% to $203, while daily rates for three-star and four-star rooms were down 14.5% and 17.3%, respectively.
