“As an alumnus, I apologize on behalf of you.”

On the 5th, when the news was delivered that former professional baseball player Jeong Soo-geun (47) was accused of assaulting a man while drinking, alumni all sighed with concern. Some have even gone so far as to say that they are apologizing on behalf of their juniors for failing to educate their juniors just because they are alumni. Even during his active years, he caused problems several times and was dishonorably dismissed during his retirement, and he continues to cause problems even after his retirement. Nevertheless, since he is an alumnus, we bow our heads together.

Jeong Soo-geun, who joined Doosan immediately after graduating from Deoksu Commercial High School (currently Deoksu High School), accepted contract terms that were quite unconventional at the time. Afterwards, he consistently averaged over 100 hits a year and had a batting average of around .300, winning the Golden Glove Award in the outfield category. After being selected for the national team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where he led the team to a bronze medal, he has recorded double-digit steals for 14 consecutive seasons since his debut and 40 or more steals for 7 consecutive years. Based on this record, it was natural for him to sign another unprecedented contract with Lotte when he became a free agent.

It would have been nice if he had shown only the bright parts while playing baseball like this, but in the end, he was unable to maintain his poor talent for a long period of time. Repeated arrests, including assault cases and drunk driving without a license, often resulted in articles being published in social media rather than sports. It was the alumni who held my hand every time that happened.

Yoo Su-ho, a graduate of Deoksu High School and a living legend as a KBS sports announcer, also did his best to cherish his juniors. In particular, when visiting Mokdong Baseball Stadium to broadcast high school baseball, he broadcasted with Jeong Soo-geun, a fellow alumnus, and always visited the dugout on days when Deoksu High School games were held. For teacher Yoo Soo-ho, Jeong Soo-geun is a very sore finger. After hearing the news of the accident two days ago, teacher Yoo Su-ho was unable to continue speaking, saying, "I'm really worried. He was a junior with a lot of innocence..."

Deoksu High School coach Jeong Yun-jin, who coached Jeong Soo-geun during his days as a coach, also responded with quite astonishment. In a phone call with MHN Sports, Coach Jeong said, "When I was in high school, I was quite conscientious. I never looked like a player who would cause an accident. But, I don't know why I learned something wrong when I went to the pros and ended up like that. It's a shame." didn't

Amidst the concerns of alumni, Jeong Soo-geun belatedly apologized to the victim, but it was reported that the victim wanted severe punishment without an agreement.
