Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer cut a ribbon and officially opened the $200 million Greek Town Casino in front of about 3,000 patrons. Many of them waited for hours to be the first to enter the city on a chilly, breezy night.
The 75,000-square-foot Mediterranean-themed casino offers 2,400 slot machines and 104 table games. The casino also offers three restaurants, five lounges, and a flower shop. There's another thing you don't often see in gambling halls at Greektown Casino. That's the window. The non-smoking room has 10 tables, 90 slot machines and a large skylight, with two game areas and adjacent bars and lounge areas decorated with large windows.
Owned by Sault St. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and a group of Detroit investors, the Grigtown Casino is located across the street from the Athenum Suite Hotel & Conference Center in Detroit's Grigtown Tourist Area.
