Major League Baseball (MLB) Cleveland Guardians ace Shane Bieber (31) will undergo elbow surgery.

"Beaver will end the season with Tommy John Surgery (reconstruction of the inner ligament of the elbow)."

Bieber, who had been limited to 21 starts last year due to elbow problems, showed strong pitching from the start of this year.

In the opening game against the Oakland Athletics on April 29, he pitched six innings of four hits, one walk and 11 strikeouts without allowing any points. However, he felt elbow pain after the game, and Cleveland postponed his next game to give him more rest time and take treatment.

And on the 3rd, his second appearance of the season, he endured pain and recorded six hits and nine strikeouts in six innings.

Later, he was recommended to have reconstruction of his elbow. Bieber ultimately decided to have the surgery. It is expected that it will take 16 months for him to come back after rehabilitation.

Despite elbow pain, he managed to strike out 20 strikeouts in two games, but his season ended in about 20 days after the opening of the season. Having lost an ace player in the beginning of the season, Cleveland is set to suffer a severe blow.

Bieber, who entered the big league in 2018, won the Cy Young Award with 8-1 loss and 1.63 ERA in 2020 when the COVID-19 shortened season was underway. He has also been selected as a two-time All-Star.
