[Asian Games] Breaking Ceremony Leading up to the Disbanding Ceremony… “We also Start as Athletes”

“Now we too are just starting out as athletes.”

On the 8th, Breaking National Team coach Jeong Hyeong-sik revealed the reason why he participated in the Korean team's disbandment ceremony for the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.

On this day, the Breaking National Team, who visited the disbandment ceremony held at the banquet hall of the Grand New Century Hotel in Hangzhou, China, hosted by the Korea Sports Council, took a seat on one side and stayed together until the end of the event. 스포츠토토

Originally, breaking was a sport in which the concept of a ‘national team’ was unfamiliar.

It was only in 2021 that the Korea Dance Sports Federation (KFD) introduced the national team selection competition as it became an official event for the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games and the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The national team, which entered the Jincheon Athletes' Village for the first time in April last year, successfully completed this tournament and showed its potential as a breaking sport.

The national team, in which Kim Hong-yeol (Hong10) won a silver medal on the 7th, attracted attention by showing off their 'B-boy' and 'B-girl' style at the disbanding ceremony, with everyone wearing hats.

Coach Jeong found the reason for attending the disbandment ceremony to be his identity as an ‘athlete’.

Coach Jeong said, "We are athletes from the moment we enter the athletes' village. Isn't this the first time Korea Breaking has attended the Asian Games as a national representative? That alone was a meaningful event."

Coach Jeong, who said he entered breaking more than 30 years ago, smiled and said, “As a breaking athlete and leader representing Korea, I will work harder with the pride of an athlete.”

Lee Ki-heung, president of the Korea Sports Council, and Choi Yoon, head of the Asian Games team, called the Breaking National Team to the podium and took commemorative photos with sports association officials.

At the suggestion of team leader Choi, everyone took a stance that showed off their style freely.

It was different from the commemorative photos of other national teams showing a ‘fighting’ stance with one arm raised.

Team leader Choi said, “Each sport has its own personality.

That’s the beauty of breaking, so we have to respect it.”

Breaking, which started from the field of culture and art, is clearly different from other sports.
Director Jeong pointed out, "Actually, I have been active as an athlete this time, but we have our own 'scene' (stage).

Our homework is to work on that side in parallel."

Breaking, which has strong artistic characteristics, relies on the judges' scoring to determine the winner.

The mechanism to ensure fairness as a sport is not yet clear.

In order to develop in line with the characteristics of a sport in which the final winner receives all the glory and honor, institutional maintenance is needed in many aspects.

Coach Jeong said, “As I played game after game in this competition, I realized that the system, including judges and operations, was constantly changing.

I also felt the need to regularly participate in judge training sessions, etc.”

“If we cannot understand the flow in our scene, we will not be able to do it in the sports field.”

“It’s a struggling structure,” he explained.

He continued, "It cannot be said that there are still parts where the judgment is not objective (in breaking).

How to make an objective judgment without subjectivity is an important aspect ahead of the Paris Olympics."

He added, “We must resolve these issues in order to be properly recognized (as a sport).”
