Tony smith elected speaker of the australian parliament

Anthony Charles "Tony" Smith (born 15 July 1950) was an Australian politician. He was educated at the University of Queensland before becoming a fitter and turner and a marine engineer. He later became a barrister and then a primary producer. In 1996, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Liberal member for Dickson. He did not receive Liberal endorsement for the 1998 election and contested it as an independent, gaining 9% of the primary vote. His candidacy enabled Labor candidate Cheryl Kernot, formerly leader of the Democrats, to win the seat.
