In Samoan legend, Maui is the son of Talaga. In Polynesian mythology, Māui is a culture hero, famous for his exploits and his trickery. He was also the creator of fire. In Polynesian spellings, 't' and 'k' are often used interchangeably, or at least without distinguishing between them. Likewise, the apostrophe used in this spelling can also replace a 't' or 'k' sound. Thus the Gilbert Islands' Tiki-tiki is comparable to the Ti'i-Ti'i of Samoa or Maui Ki-i-k-i'i of Hawai'i,
