Thomas Dunlop Galbraith, 1st Baron Strathclyde PC (20 March 1891 – 12 July 1985) was a Scottish Unionist Party politician.

He studied at Glasgow Academy; Eastman's, Southsea; Royal Naval College, Osborne and Royal Naval College Dartmouth. He then served in the Royal Navy, 1903-22.

He then became a chartered accountant and practised, 1925–70.

Political career

He served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Glasgow Pollok from 1940 to 1955, being originally elected at a by-election and then at the 1945, 1950 and 1951 general elections. He served as Under-Secretary of State for Scotland in Winston Churchill's caretaker government from May to July 1945. He was made a peer on 4 May 1955, shortly before the 1955 general election, and served as a Minister of State at the Scottish Office until 1958.

Marriage & Children

Strathclyde married Ida Galloway in 1915. They had seven children:

  • Hon Sir Thomas Galloway Dunlop Galbraith (born 10 March 1917, died 2 January 1982), father of Thomas Galbraith, 2nd Baron Strathclyde
  • William Brodie Galloway Galbraith (born 20 September 1918, killed in action in World War II)
  • Hon James Muir Galloway Galbraith (born 27 September 1920, died 4 October 2003)
  • Hon Ida Jean Galloway Galbraith (born 21 January 1922)
  • Hon Norman Dunlop Galloway Galbraith (born 24 January 1925, died 24 June 2013)
  • Hon David Muir Galloway Galbraith (born 8 March 1928, died 12 August 2006)
  • Hon Heather Margaret Anne Galloway Galbraith (born 27 February 1930)
