Colonel Thomas Butler of Kilcash (died 1738) was the son of Walter Butler of Garryricken and Lady Mary Plunket, only daughter of Christopher, 2nd Earl of Fingall. He succeeded to the estates of his grandfather - Richard Butler of Kilcash. He was Colonel of a regiment of foot in the Jacobite Irish Army of King James II.

Marriage and issue

In 1696, he married Lady Margaret Burke, eldest daughter of William, Earl of Clanricarde, widow of Bryan Magennis, Viscount Iveagh. She died at Kilcash 19 July 1744. They had three sons and five daughters.

  • Richard Butler, who was killed by a fall from his horse at Kilcash, in 1711.
  • Walter Butler, who died, unmarried, of smallpox, at the Royal Academy at Paris.
  • John Butler, 15th Earl of Ormonde, who succeeded to the estates of the 1st Earl of Arran.
  • Mary Butler, who married Bryan Cavanagh, of Borris, County Carlow.
  • Honora Butler (died of the smallpox in 1730), who married Valentine, Lord Kenmare in November 1720.
  • Hellen Butler, who married firstly Mr Esmond, and secondly, Richard Butler of Westcourt.
  • Margaret Butler, who married George Matthew of Thurles, afterward of Thomastown.
  • Catharine Butler, who became the third wife of James Mandeville, of Ballydyne, Tipperary. They had no issue.
