"This Is the Day" is a song by American indie rock band Ivy. It was released as the third single from their second studio album, Apartment Life, in Austria on April 29, 1999. It was preceded by singles "I've Got a Feeling" and "The Best Thing".

Contents

After initially being released as a promotional single in the United States, "This Is the Day" was re-released in 1999 after appearing on the soundtrack for the film There's Something About Mary.

Background and composition

"This Is the Day" was released as a CD single in 1999, with B-sides "Sleeping Late" and "Sweet Mary"; the same two B-sides also appeared on the European "You Don't Know Anything" CD single, issued by Atlantic Records.

Frank Tortorici, writing for MTV, stated that "with their bouncy, Blondie-esque 'This Is the Day' Ivy set a much different tone and feel than the guitar-driven pop of Fountains of Wayne".

Critical reception

Much like the album, "This Is the Day" received primarily positive reviews from critics. Jack Rabid from AllMusic called the song a "60s-ish, horn laden skip [that] is lightweight [and] la-la-la pop personified".
