Profiles

Theatre Suburbia is a theatre company in the Oak Forest area of Houston, Texas. It presents a full year of theatrical productions in a community-operated theatre.

Theatre Suburbia is Northwest Houston's longest running all-volunteer playhouse. Having produced over 355 shows, 2014-2015 is their 54th season. Throughout the years, they have endeavored to provide quality live theatre to the Houston area, trying to reach as many as possible by providing a wide variety of plays as well as the unique sets custom designed for each show. Theatre Suburbia is a small theatre, but that only refers to their physical space, not the quality of live theatre they provide.

Each season, Theatre Suburbia brings seven plays to life, remaining dark for only two weekends between productions. They have produced plays by Richard Alfieri, Norm Foster, Sam Bobrick, Philip Barry, Agatha Christie, and many more. Tickets are very reasonably priced and they offer season ticket packages as well as group, senior, and student rates. Performances run on Fridays and Saturdays for five weekends (six for the summer mellerdrammer) and include two Sunday matinees (four for the summer mellerdrammer).

Having produced a variety of works including classics, heavy dramas, dark comedies, light comedies, mysteries, children’s shows, and the ever popular mellerdrammer, versatility seems to be the theme of Theatre Suburbia's show selections. Additionally, they are willing to consider any script or to try something new, having produced a number of works by the local playwright community (some of which have gone on to be published) and promote the local talent pool here in Houston.

The theatre is supported by box office sales, memberships, patronage, corporate donations, and occasional grants. But the theatre's biggest support comes from an ever-changing group of dedicated and willing individuals working diligently to do whatever is needed to continue bringing quality theatre to the Houston community.

In 2008, the theatre moved from their original location at 1410 West 43rd Street to their permanent location near the intersection of West 43rd Street and the Hempstead Highway:
