Profiles

The Heritage School is a co-educational, independent day school in Newnan, in the U.S. state of Georgia, serving preschool, kindergarten, elementary, middle-, and high-school students and families from diverse communities.

Contents

In March, 1969, a group of local parents came together and decided to establish an independent school in Newnan. Just eight months later, on October 7, 1969, the State of Georgia granted a charter to "The Heritage School, Incorporated." Mrs. Katie Arnall Freeman donated 62 acres of land on Highway 29 to the trustees of The Heritage School in early 1970 as a site for the School. Shortly thereafter, the trustees named George H. Keller, Jr. as first headmaster. The Heritage School opened its doors to 134 students in September 1970, serving grades one through eight. There were eleven teachers. In 1973, grades nine and ten were added, along with a gymnasium. During the next three years, The Heritage School added kindergarten and grades eleven and twelve. Since graduating its first class in 1975, the school has grown deliberately but steadily, evolving both its campus and its curriculum with local, national, and global best practices in teaching and learning. As of 2014, there are 435 students at The Heritage School, along with 75 faculty and staff.

Athletics and clubs

Athletic fields include football, soccer, baseball/softball as well as a track; the wooded campus is also a favored cross-country meet locale. Several acres of the campus are set aside for the Outdoor Adventure Area and the Nature Trail, including a creek, climbing walls, and ropes course. There are four tennis courts. Heritage also boasts a swim team and golf team. The football team played its first game in August 2006 and appeared in their first playoff game in 2008.

Fine arts

At Heritage, the Fine Arts are essential and given ample time to flourish. The foundation studies in the visual and performing arts are taught alongside the fundamentals of mathematics and grammar. Education in the Performing Arts begins with the very youngest students, who sing and perform on a regular basis both on and off campus, getting a crucial, early start building their stage confidence and self-esteem. Instrumental Music is added in Lower School and continues, along with Choral Music, through all age levels. The annual spring musical includes actors and singers from First through Twelfth grades, mentored by the Upper School Drama students and Heritage Singers. Students are encouraged to perform at school and in the community.

Heritage has a very active fine arts program. This includes AP art classes. The school band, Talons, performs regularly around the Newnan area. The choir has won various singing competitions and gives three concerts each year. The drama department has a long legacy of producing quality shows and has won numerous titles at the regional and state competitions.

Chorus soloist Olivia Gentry leads the concerts.
