The Dairy Godmother is a frozen custard shop located in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia. Elizabeth Davis opened the shop in June 2001.

The Dairy Godmother serves vanilla and chocolate frozen custard daily as well as a daily special. Also served are "Treats of the Day", which range from sticky toffee pudding to various fruit cobblers, sorbet, frozen custard cakes, a variety of baked goods and an assortment of 'Pop Culture' ice pops including such exotic flavors as Lemon Buttermilk and Vietnamese Coffee. The ice pops and the process of making them were featured on an episode of Unique Eats on The Cooking Channel.

History

It was founded by Elizabeth Davis, a graduate of New York’s Culinary Institute of America and daughter of Wisconsin Congressman Glenn Davis. The shop opened to the public on June 9, 2001 as the Del Ray Dreamery. In 2005, it was discovered that the term "Dreamery" was already trademarked and owned by Integrated Brands. Owner Elizabeth announced a contest on her website to ask people to invent a new name. The winning name was "That Custard Place in Del Ray". The name did not last and after a few months, it became "The Dairy Godmother".
