The men's singles competition was part of the tennis program at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
Marc Rosset was the defending champion; he won the gold medal in 1992 – he was defeated by Renzo Furlan in the third round. Andre Agassi of the United States defeated Sergi Bruguera of Spain with a score of 6–2, 6–3, 6–1 in the final.
