The European men's ice hockey team is governed by the International Ice Hockey Federation, National Hockey League's organization and its players' association. It represents countries in Europe not otherwise represented at the World Cup of Hockey (e.g., the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia and Sweden).

For the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, team Europe consisted of players from Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland.

They played in 6 games. Team Europe shockingly shut out Team USA 3-0. Then they beat Team Czech Republic 3-2 in OT and lost to Canada 4-1 to end the group stage. Team Europe clinched the second seed in Group A and a semi-final game against Sweden.

Europe and Sweden battled hard, to the last second. Europe's 2-1 lead (on goals by Marian Gaborik and Tomas Tatar) vanished when Sweden scored and pushed the game to OT. There, Tatar slammed home a rebound to shockingly send Team Europe to the World Cup Final against Canada. Sweden goalie Henrik Lunqvist thought that Tatar kicked the puck in, but reviews showed he didn't.

The final was a best-of-three. In game one Canada beat Europe 3-1, where Europe was cleanly beat. In Game 2 Zdeno Chara scored for Europe early. Canada played sloppy most of the game and it looked like Europe could force a Game 3. But Canada woke up. Canadian forwards Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand scored to win 2-1 and end the World Cup of Hockey.
2-1-0 group stage record and a 1-2-0 semi-final/final record made for a 3-3-0 record. Team Europe scored 11 goals and allowed 14 in six games at the World Cup of Hockey 2016.
