Tantalum pentaiodide

Tantalum pentaiodide is the inorganic compound with the formula Ta2I10. It is a black, moisture-sensitive, diamagnetic solid.

Synthesis and structure

Tantalum pentaiodide forms from the reaction of metallic tantalum with excess iodine. It can also be prepared by heating tantalum pentoxide with aluminium triiodide:

3 Ta 2 O 5 + 10 AlI 3 3 Ta 2 I 10 + 5 Al 2 O 3

Its structure has been verified by X-ray crystallography, which reveals an edge-shared bioctahedral structure, as observed for many pentahalides of Nb and Ta.
