Tampa is the debut novel by author Alissa Nutting.

Contents

Plot

The novel centers around Celeste Price, a middle school teacher who recounts her pursuit of Jack Patrick, a fourteen year old student of hers.

Background

Tampa is the debut novel of Alissa Nutting, an essayist and creative writing professor whose first book was the 2010 short story collection Unclean Jobs for Women and Girls. Nutting was inspired by Debra Lafave, a teacher charged with having sex with her under-age students in 2005. Nutting went to high school with Lafave; seeing someone she knew on the news raised her awareness of the issue of female predators.

Controversy

Some bookstores declined to offer the novel for sale for being too explicit regarding the nature of, ultimately, child sexual abuse by women.

Reception

The detail of sexual content gained mixed reactions from critics.

Film

In August 2016 filmmaker Harmony Korine revealed that he was working on an adaptation of the novel.
