Profiles

The TIFR Centre in Bangalore is a part of the School of Mathematics of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. The centre arose and evolved through efforts of the school, since the mid-seventies, to develop areas in applicable mathematics. Many of renowned mathematicians from India and overseas have contributed to the development of the Centre.

Research at advanced level is currently pursued at the centre in both theoretical and numerical aspects of differential equations, especially in the following topics:

  • Applications of Nonlinear Functional Analysis in the Study of Differential Equations.
  • Control Aspects of Partial Differential Equations.
  • Hyperbolic Equations and Conservation Laws.
  • Homogenization and Solid Fluid Interactions.
  • Numerical Analysis of PDE (Special Reference to Atmospheric Dynamics).
  • The centre offers consultation at individual and institutional levels, in terms of application of the theory to engineering related problems and exposition of underlying mathematics.

The centre has played an active role in training students in areas of applicable mathematics through the IISc-TIFR Joint Programme. Following the deemed university status of TIFR, from the year 2004 the TIFR Centre offers its own programmes and they are:

  • Ph.D.
  • Integrated Ph.D. (M.Sc. and Ph.D.)
  • The centre has a programme to invite Visiting Professors, both for dissemination of new topics through lecture courses and for research collaboration.

The centre also offers Post-Doctoral Fellowships and possibilities of Short-Term Visits.
