Sven Oftedal (politician)

Sven Oftedal (3 June 1905 – 23 June 1948) was a Norwegian physician and politician, representing the Labour Party. He was Minister of Social Affairs in 1945 and 1945-1948 and a member of the Storting (the Norwegian parliament) (1945 - 1948).

During World War II his involvement in the resistance movement led to that Oftedal was arrested in 1941 and sent to Grini detention camp. He was released but was arrested again in the fall of 1942. In February 1943 he was sent to the German concentration camp Sachsenhausen north of Berlin as prisoner number 61451, and stayed there until the German capitulation. As a prisoner he served as a physician at the camp hospital until he became sick himself and had to ask for redemption.
