Susan Grant is a pilot and New York Times bestselling author best known for combining science fiction with romance. Grant graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 1982, the third class to include women, and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force. She went on to pilot training at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas. After graduating, she stayed on as a flight instructor. She later took an assignment at Mather Air Force Base, California, flying T-43s, then left the Air Force to work for United Airlines as a pilot on Boeing 737s and Boeing 747s.
She began writing in 1997. Her first book was titled Once a Pirate and was published in February 2000. Her second book, The Star King, was a 2001 Romance Writers of America RITA Award finalist. She went on to publish a number of award-winning, best-selling novellas and novels, including Contact, which won the 2003 Romance Writers of America RITA Award.
Reversion of rights
In February 2012 Susan Grant mentioned in her blog that she was not receiving royalties for ebook sales of The Scarlet Empress. In September 2012 she announced that the rights to that book and eight other titles had reverted to her from Dorchester Publishing. In May 2013, she announced that the first of those titles was available in ebook form, with the others available shortly. In June 2013 all 9 original titles were available.
