Sully is a small town of 821 (2010) located in Jasper County, Iowa, United States named after railroad man Alfred Sully.

History

Sully was platted in 1882. The community was incorporated in 1901.

Attractions

Van Wijk Winery

The City of Sully is home to the Van Wijk Winery, which has been producing twenty varieties of Iowa wine since 2009.

Coffee Cup Cafe

The Coffee Cup Cafe started in 1970 with old fashioned cooking with great recipes from the community. It is said that they take pride in their "made from scratch" cooking, which includes pies that are well known throughout Iowa.

Jasper County Freedom Rock

Freedom Rock painter Raymond “Bubba” Sorensen II of Greenfield finished the Jasper County Freedom Rock in 2014, the 17th of the 99 county rocks in the Freedom Rock Tour he is painting in Iowa. The Jasper County Freedom Rock includes the east side sketch based on Sgt. William Jasper rallying the troops at Fort Sullivan, S.C., and is located on the East side of the Sully square.

Geography

Sully is located at 41°34′43″N 92°50′44″W (41.578638, -92.845441).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.58 square miles (1.50 km2), all of it land.

The community is south of Interstate 80.

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 821 people, 334 households, and 257 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,415.5 inhabitants per square mile (546.5/km2). There were 358 housing units at an average density of 617.2 per square mile (238.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 99.6% White, 0.2% African American, and 0.1% Asian. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.2% of the population.

There were 334 households of which 28.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.9% were married couples living together, 3.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 1.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 23.1% were non-families. 21.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.87.

The median age in the city was 45.1 years. 24.1% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 19.1% were from 25 to 44; 29.9% were from 45 to 64; and 20.3% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 50.2% male and 49.8% female.

2000 census

As of the census of 2000, there were 904 people, 348 households, and 271 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,736.5 people per square mile (671.2/km²). There were 360 housing units at an average density of 691.5 per square mile (267.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.78% White and 0.22% Asian.

There were 348 households out of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.8% were married couples living together, 3.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.1% were non-families. 21.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.03.

28.5% were under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 18.9% from 45 to 64, and 20.0% were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $47,344, and the median income for a family was $54,018. Males had a median income of $36,563 versus $25,446 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,506. About 1.1% of families and 1.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0.7% of those under age 18 and 2.2% of those age 65 or over.
