Subterranea Entertainment is the horror arm of Mad Dog Movies, an animation and video production company based in Rochester, New York. The Subterranea name was inspired by the basement apartment where founder Mike Boas lived in college.
Subterranea's first production was Jason: The Rebirth, an animated short produced for the Friday the 13th (franchise) "Cut 'Em Up" contest held in Santa Monica, California and sponsored by Paramount. Jason took second prize in the contest and went on to win first place at the NecroComicon 25th Anniversary Friday the 13th Celebration.
In 2006, Subterranea released H.P. Lovecraft's The Other Gods, which purported to be a lost silent film from 1924. In his review of the film at Unfilmable.com, special effects artist Tom Sullivan described The Other Gods as a "psychedelic experience." Based on the short story The Other Gods by H. P. Lovecraft, the film premiered at the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival and has gone on to screen at a dozen more venues.
Since then, animator Mike Boas has contributed segments for Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated as well as film festival promos for the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival and the Little Theatre 25 Hour Horror Fest, all under the Subterranea label.
