Subcouncils of the City of Cape Town

The Subcouncils of the City of Cape Town are political subdivisions of the City of Cape Town. The city is divided into 24 subcouncil areas, each of which is made up of between 3 and 6 of the wards of the city. The subcouncil itself consists of the ward councillors along with a number of proportional representation councillors allocated to that subcouncil.

Each subcouncil is led by a Chairperson, who is one of the councillors; it also appoints a manager to run its day-to-day business. A subcouncil does not have any inherent responsibilities in law, but it is entitled to make recommendations to the City Council about anything that affects its area. The City Council may also delegate responsibilities to the subcouncils.
