Stroboscopic cupola was a construction consisting of an outer and an inner cylinder, both pierced by vertical vision slits. Rotating them created the stroboscopic illusion that the cupola disappeared (similar to seeing through a plank-fence when speeding past), leading to a better perception of the surroundings, while the head was still more or less protected.
