Storylines

After supporting her brother through a murder trial the previous year, Te Hana Hudson (Vanessa Rare) finally finds happiness in Bronson Paraone (Kirk Torrance) and the two leave Ferndale. Almost two years after the birth and sudden death of their son, newlyweds Tama (David Wikaira-Paul) and Shannon Hudson (Amber Curreen) announced they are expecting their second child. Shannon went away to stay with the Hudsons and gave birth to a baby girl named Rangimarie (Mia Curreen-Poko). Tama and Shannon found themselves makeshift parents when Tama's delinquent cousin Eti (Isaac Bell) came to stay with them.

Chris Warner (Michael Galvin) and Toni Thompson (Laura Hill) married but tragedy struck when Toni fell down the stairs and miscarried their second son, James. The couple separated but when Harry (Campbell Callum-Ross) ran away from home, the two moved back in together as flatmates. An escort named Greta Saunders (Meryl Maine) made moves on Chris and he eventually gave into temptation at the same time as Toni decided to try again at the marriage. They stay separated for months but finally reconciled and went on a second honeymoon. Martin "Sticky" Stickwell (Ian Hughes) had a stroke and he and his partner, Barbara Heywood (Annie Whittle) departed Ferndale so he could recover.

Maia Jeffries (Anna Jullienne) and Jay Copeland (Jaime Passier-Armstrong) continued to try for a baby but the arrival of Maia's sister Tania (Faye Smythe) lead to the girl's father Ian (Jeffrey Thomas) having a rediagnosis of his illness, which turned out to be Kennedy's disease, preventing Maia of having a child without afflicting them. Maia put the baby ideas on the back burner whilst Jay went behind her back and slept with Norman Hanson (Jacob Tomuri) in an attempt to get pregnant. When Maia found out the two broke up temporarily but upon their reconciliation, the two got engaged and Maia gave permission for Norman to be the father. Norman discovered he had a terminal brain tumor and begin to hallucinate, something which altered his view on reality. His girlfriend Li Mei Chen (Li Ming Hu) began accepting bribes to pay for his medical bill and even slept with people for money.

Mark Weston's (Tim Foley) school friend Hugo Carmont (Fraser Brown) showed up and started offering legal advice to the staff. Several burglaries started to occur in the area and suspicion fell on Eti, who was arrested. Nick (Karl Burnett) and Waverley Harrison's (Claire Chitham) home was broken into and an increasingly paranoid Nick ended up threatening Wave with a gun when he mistook her for an intruder. The family ended up leaving to Taranaki to escape the fear they lived in. Manipulative nurse Robyn Stokes (Kirstie O'Sullivan) returned to Ferndale and set her sights on CEO Andrew Solomon (Paolo Rotondo) and to get his attention she pretended to have been victimized by the burglar, only to get attacked in her own home as payback.

Claire Solomon (Emily Robins) and Jake Valentine (Calum Gittins) entered a relationship but when Claire got involved in a hit and run accident, Jake took the blame. The truth was eventually revealed and Claire was sentenced to community service. The couple broke up but reconciled when the teenagers began smoking dope. Eventually Claire began an affair with the much older Mark and Jake left her. Following the revelation that Sarah Potts (Amanda Billing) was Daniel's (Jarred Blakiston) sister, Daniel began to act out in an attempt to find out his fathers identity. He eventually tracked his father, Tim (Millen Baird) down after a school reunion and after initial hesitation on Tim's part, went to live with him in Samoa.

It soon became clear that Hugo was mentally unstable and he claimed to Jay that he and Mark were secretly in a relationship together. He realized Mark was in love with Maia and stalked the two to a forest where he attempted to murder Maia, only to fall off a cliff after admitting to being the home burglar. He was presumed dead but several weeks later returned to the hospital and plead for Mark's love. Mark robbed him in and Hugo was imprisoned. Craig Valentine (Renato Bartolomei) began dating Huia Samuels (Nicola Kawana) but when Sarah heard the news Andrew had died in a plane crash, she realized she did love Craig, only for Andrew to show up unharmed. Robyn continued to manipulate the couple in an attempt to win back Andrew and she hired a man to run Andrew down in a car, leaving him with brain damage. She took advantage of his state and slept with him, leaving her pregnant with twins. Sarah married Andrew despite her mutual love for Craig, only for Robyn to arrive and announce her pregnancy. Sarah and Andrew broke up, leaving him to depart with Robyn to England.

After a social club gathering, a car consisting of Norman, Tama, Scarlett (Nicole Thomson), Eti and Li Mei crashed and though it looked like Eti wasn't going to make it, the terminally ill Norman ended up dying, putting an end to Jay and Maia's baby dream. Judy Brownlee (Donogh Rees) fell in love with Craig though his love for Sarah got in the way and she took up drinking. Justine Jones (Laurie Foell) arrived to the hospital and controversially stole a surgical contract out from underneath Chris before returning to Australia. Yvonne Jeffries (Alison Quigan) was shocked when the boy she adopted out at birth, Hamish Flynn (Phil Brown) reappeared in her life and she embraced him, despite struggling with Maia's sexuality.

Chris was shocked when he discovered his disabled twin sister Amanda Warner (Marissa Stott) had been kidnapped and returned to New Zealand by her carer Liam Todd (Campbell Cooley). Liam wished to prove Amanda had brain function not seen by her institution in Europe. Chris was skeptical but came round to the idea when she affectionately touched him. Chris took Amanda into his home and a background check on Liam proved he had spent time in a psychiatric ward. Toni also suspected Liam of molesting Amanda. Eventually Chris decided to put Amanda into a care ward in Ferndale and shocked all when he allowed Liam caring rights.

Vinnie Kruse (Pua Magasiva) had a brief spell as charge nurse before becoming a paramedic. However, after coming across a bloody murder scene, Vinnie returned to nursing. He began to date Jemima Hampton (Liesha Ward-Knox) and was shocked at the years end when she announced she was pregnant.
