A stock knife is a large, long handled knife with a hook at the far end. The hook is engaged into an eye in the work bench and allows the workman to exert great force when required.

The knife back and handle are made of wrought iron to give flexible strength, while the blade is made of high carbon steel to give a razor sharp edge.

They are commonly used in the making of English clogs. A well respected manufacturer was John Watts of Lambert Street, Sheffield who produced knives in the Henry Carter style.
