Stefan Sittig

Stefan Sittig (born September 17, 1972 in Washington, D.C., United States) is known mostly as an American musical theatre director, choreographer and performer. He holds a BA from the University of Virginia, and an MFA in Theatre from Virginia Commonwealth University. His creative work has appeared Off-Broadway, internationally in Canada and Uruguay, and regionally in Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Although he was born in the U.S., Sittig's mother is Uruguayan and he was raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is perhaps best known as co-director and choreographer of the World Premiere of the Spanish version of Stephen Schwartz's musical Working (Spanish title: Trabajadores).

In New York City, Stefan created choreography for the rock musical, Jessie at The Chelsea Playhouse, and Who Is Earth Mae? at Theatre Row - 42nd Street. He has also choreographed several productions in the Washington D.C. area including Man of La Mancha for The Washington Savoyards, Noël & Gertie for MetroStage, Polaroid Stories for The Studio Theatre, Jesus Christ Superstar for Open Circle Theatre (4 Helen Hayes Award nominations, including Outstanding Resident Musical), Dorothy Meets Alice and Winnie The Pooh for Adventure Theatre, Flora The Red Menace for 1st Stage, Hollywood Pinafore for The American Century Theater and many other regional productions along the east coast. Additionally, he has directed and choreographed productions of the musical revues Beehive, Red Hot & Cole and Jerry's Girls.

His choreography has also been featured on television, most notably for D.C. Lottery's Rolling Cash 5 promos, featuring Chuck Brown.

As a performer, he has appeared at The Kennedy Center, Signature Theatre, Studio Theatre, Olney Theatre Center, The Barksdale Theatre, Theatre IV, Theatre Virginia, The Actor's Theatre of Washington and Heritage Repertory Theatre. In more than 25 years in the theatre, he has had the pleasure of appearing onstage or working with several Broadway and Hollywood luminaries, including Angela Lansbury, George Hearn, Tina Fey, Savion Glover, Christina Hendricks, Jason George, Zachary Knighton, Florence Lacey, Judy McLane [1], Betty Ann Grove and Helen Carey.

Stefan received the 2016 WATCH Award for Outstanding Stage Combat for West Side Story and the 2015 WATCH Award for Outstanding Choreography for In The Heights. He has also received WATCH Award Nominations for Outstanding Choreography for West Side Story (2016) and A Chorus Line (2013). Projects he has been involved with as a director, choreographer or performer, have garnered a total of 4 Helen Hayes Awards,19 Helen Hayes Award nominations, 5 WATCH Awards, 36 WATCH Award nominations, 2 Ruby Griffith Awards, 48 DC Metro Theater Arts honors, 1 Broadway World Award nomination and 1 DC Theatre Scene Award nomination.

Stefan is also a Professor of Humanities & Theatre at University of Maryland University College (UMUC), where he teaches Seminar in Shakespeare Studies, Acting I, Acting II, Introduction To Theatre and Introduction to Humanities. He is the recipient of the 2016 UMUC Professional Achievement Award and has been nominated three times for the Stanley J. Drazek Excellence in Teaching award. He has also served on the faculty of The University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, Messiah College, The National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts in Georgetown (NCDA), The School of the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community (SPARC), Arlington Center for Dance, and the Escuela de Comedia Musical in Montevideo, Uruguay. He has taught master classes, workshops, coached students, and created choreography for theatre productions at Georgetown University, George Washington University, James Madison University and George Mason University.

He is a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC) and a Board Member and Chair of the College/University Division of Virginia Theatre Association (VTA) where he created VTA Career Jumpstart, an on-going series aimed at helping college/university students in Virginia connect, network, and learn from award-winning theatre professionals.
