St. Xavier's Higher Secondary School was established at Palayamkottai in 1880. Most of the schools in Palayamkottai were founded by Jesuit Fathers and religious Sisters from the Catholic church. Various Jesuits (members of the Society of Jesus) have since administered the school. Its motto is Veritate Lumen et Vita ("Life and Light through Truth").
