St. Joseph's School, Hassan, was founded by the Jesuits in the year 1956. The compound has grown to include a primary school (K through 5), medium school (6 through 10), and pre-university college (11 and 12). St. Joseph's First Grade College is also on the grounds as well as a boarding house and hostel. Since 1992 the native Holy Cross sisters have assisted with the schools.

Background

The Hassan city locale, between Bangalore and Mangalore, is noted for its beauty and cultural heritage. It is also the master control station for satellites.

Founded in 1956, St. Joseph's is one of the oldest educational institutions established in Hassan. The kindergarten has grown to enrol 65, the primary and high schools 1,413, and the preuniversity college over 600 students. The degree college on the grounds has an enrolment of over 300. There is also a boarding house for about 80 boys from the dioceses of Chikamagalur, Bangalore, Shimoga, and Mangalore, as well as a hostel for the College. Approaching 2500 students on campus, St. Joseph's has a staff of over 90.

Motto

The school's motto is "Service, the Light of Life." This is represented in its shield through IHS, the first three letters of "Jesus" in Greek and also symbolising faith, hope, and love; the rising sun, a symbol of vitality; the lotus, depicting wholeness; and open hands symbolising the gift we receive from God in our education. The school provides students with opportunities for service, in the interest of social concern and human development.

Holy Cross Sisters

The Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross, South Province Bangalore, since 1992 have assisted with teaching and helping with the boarding students. In 1996 the Sisters opened a boarding facility for indigent girls.
