St. John the Baptist is a Roman Catholic church in New Bedford, Massachusetts, part of the Diocese of Fall River.

History

St. John the Baptist parish was founded in 1871 and is the oldest Portuguese parish in America and the 2nd oldest Catholic parish in New Bedford. The Parish was closed November 2012.

Building

The first church, dedicated in 1875, was later destroyed by fire. The present Romanesque style church with Byzantine elements was built in 1913 to the designs of Boston architect Matthew Sullivan.
