Production

In 2013, it was reported that a tenth season was in production and expected to air in 2014, but season nine was elongated into and past that year due to production of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. On December 10, 2014, then-showrunner Paul Tibbitt announced on his Twitter page that series creator Stephen Hillenburg would return to work on the show in January 2015. According to a tweet by Vincent Waller, the production of Season 10 began on Monday, October 12, 2015. During the second half of the previous season, Waller and Marc Ceccarelli took Paul Tibbitt's place as showrunner. Prior to this, Waller served as the creative director and an occasional writer and storyboard director of the series, while Ceccarelli served as a staff writer and storyboard director (and eventually, the series' animatic director). On February 16, 2016, Vincent Waller revealed season 10 would have 13 half-hour episodes. This has fluctuated from the previous announcements of 15 half-hours and 26 episodes. However, season 10 actually has 11 half-hour episodes. There is at least one 22 minute episode special planned for Season 10. On October 15, 2016, the season premiered with the episode "Whirly Brains", more than one year after it began production. Ben Gruber, a writer for Teen Titans Go! and Breadwinners, and co-created Adult Swim's Superjail! is also a writer for this season.

Episodes

The tenth season of SpongeBob SquarePants consists of 11 episodes (5 have aired, 10 segments, 0 Patchy segments, 1 short), which are ordered below by production number and not their original broadcast order. It is the shortest season, lacking the usual 26 episode length. Showrunner Vincent Waller stated that this was due to accounting and contractual issues.
