Spaghetti Tacos were first seen in iCarly (Season 2) and later in Spongebob (Season 9), spaghetti tacos quickly became a food pop culture phenomenon. On the show, Spencer Shay, Carly from iCarly's older brother, created them one night when he couldn't decide between having spaghetti or tacos for dinner. What started as a joke food invented by writer Dan Schneider, quickly grew into a pop culture sensation.

The New York Times wrote an article about spaghetti tacos, which was featured in their food and dining section on October 5, 2010. There are dozens of recipes and variations of the joke food, including a desert version with brownie mix, strawberries and frosting, and a more "traditional" version with Italian sausage and green peppers. Barefoot Kitchen Witch, a popular cooking blog, posted a recipe including fresh guacamole and jalapeƱo salsa, as well as a soft shell variety for children who don't like hard shelled tacos.

The spaghetti taco craze appears to have died down with the ending of iCarly, although other Nickelodeon shows still make occasional references to the silly food.
